I am a Social Security recipient. I have bipolar disorder and spondylosis.
But when news broke that richy-rich head of the SSA, Leland Dudek had said something about shutting the agency down because DOGE couldn't get its grimy fingers on our data, I didn't panic. Tampering with Social Security is well-known as "touching the third rail", politically speaking. Tens of millions of people would unelect the heck out of anyone toying with the system. Well, I don't know who got to Leland, but he has walked back that threat, claiming that court clarification of its ruling was satisfactory to him and that he would not shut down the agency. But I suspect the fury came from on high, perhaps from someone like Susie Wiles, who is tasked with herding all of Trump's political cats. It was a monumentally stupid gaffe and is absolutely a reflection on Trump's inability to hire "the best people".
